Red Alert: The Aftermath & Counterstrike
Fix for OS/2 Warp 4.0

Download RAOS2FIX.ZIP (2793 bytes) here.

About
Command & Conquer Red Alert works great in OS/2 but if you love the game, you have to play the add-on packs. The add-on packs offer several new missions each, include many multiplayer maps, and improve the game's features in a number of areas. Unfortunately the add-ons don't work in OS/2, they can't find the CD-ROM drive. Talking to Westwood's support got the standard response "we don't support OS/2" so I decided to try and fix things myself.

RAFIX is a small DOS TSR program that fixes the OS/2 DOS box so that it operates exactly like MS-DOS does in one circumstance. This program does nothing to any Westwood file, it is not a patch. This program DOES NOT disable Red Alert's copy protection in any way, you still need to purchase the program and use the CD's to play Red Alert.

This program is not sanctioned or supported by Westwood, so please don't bother them about it, you'll probably just get me in trouble.

This program was tested on OS/2 Warp 4.0 and OS/2 Warp 4.0 with fixpack 5.

This software is freeware. If you like it, please drop me a thank-you email. This software may be redistributed provided that this entire archive including this documentation is included in the redistribution.

Installation
Place RAFIX.COM in any directory you like.

Usage
Run RAFIX each time before you run Red Alert. Assuming your CD-ROM drive is D:, you may use the enclosed RAOS2.BAT file. I recommend you close the DOS window that you run RAFIX in after you are finished playing. It is a TSR program and has not been tested with other applications so it may cause problems. When you start RA.EXE make sure you use the -CDx: parameter where x is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive. You will see the following when you run RAFIX:

Version 1.01 Copyright (c)1999 Robert Basler (spam@aurora-systems.com)

Fix installed.
Counterstrike and The Aftermath will now work in this OS/2 Warp DOS
Fullscreen Session.

Don't forget to use the -CDx: parameter when starting RA.EXE where x is
the drive letter of your CD-ROM.
E:\REDALERT>_

Setting up an OS/2 DOS Fullscreen session for Red Alert
Set DOS_HIGH to On to give RA some extra conventional memory.
Set DPMI_DOS_API to enabled
Set DPMI_MEMORY_LIMIT to 64.
Set HW_TIMER to On.
Set INT_DURING_IO to On.
Set VIDEO_MODE_RESTRICTION to NONE.

Null-Modem Multiplayer May Not Work
On some systems if you choose to start a null-modem multiplayer game, Red Alert crashes. Sorry, I'm not going to fix this. This problem is not related to the RAFIX.COM program.

Source Code
The source code was written for Borland Turbo Assembler. I have included the batch file I use to compile it in the archive RAOS2SRC.ZIP (4.8K) To compile it if you have Turbo Assembler, type C RAFIX at a DOS prompt.

Revisions
1.0 - Initial release.
1.01 - Fixed bug that may corrupt carry flag. Bug doesn't seem to affect operation, but it may affect other program's stability with this TSR installed. Some day I'll ship a bug-free first release.
