Aurora for Windows 2.0

This version of Aurora is no longer supported.

If you do not have it, we strongly recommend you download this update at Aurora for Windows 2.01 Update.

New features in version 2.0 include:

Aurora 2.0 Online User's Guide

We have had a number of requests for a printed user's guide for Aurora for Windows. We have not yet decided to offer one with our next release of Aurora for Windows, but we have made a compilation of all the documentation available in Aurora 2.0 for Windows' online help files. This file is called awin2doc.exe and is handy for quick reference and searching. You can download it by clicking here, it is a DOS self-extracting archive and is 268,070 bytes. After you run awin2doc.exe in a temporary directory, an installation program install.exe will appear there and you can use that to install this update.

Additional SSIL Drivers for Aurora for Windows

Download MORESSIL.EXE (89K) which contains additional SSIL speech synthesizer drivers for Aurora for Windows. Note: These drivers are not supplied by Aurora Systems, we do not have access to source for them, nor do we own the synthesizers included so that we can test these drivers. They are provided as-is, but we will do what we can to help you with them. Drivers are included for: This is a DOS self-extracting archive file that you should put into your AWIN2 directory and then run to create the SSIL subdirectory where the new drivers will be placed. After the files are extracted, see the file MOREREAD.ME in \AWIN2\SSIL\ for additional information.

Known Problems

The following problems and updates apply to both Aurora for Windows 2.0 and 2.01.

Problem: Aurora Prediction and Echo do not work with ICQ 2000 beta, problems in some areas with previous versions.
Fix: ICQ uses a Windows "reserved" feature in such a way that it confuses Aurora. You need to upgrade to version 3.05, then get then get the latest release of Aurora 3 AWINDEMO.EXE then follow these directions:

1) Shut down any Aurora programs.
2) Run the file to install the latest release of Aurora 3.
3) You need to edit the [Aurora] section of the AURORA.INI file in your AWIN3 directory using Notepad as follows:

ReservedBit can be between 0 and 3. 1 does not work with Microsoft Works. 2 is the default, but does not work with ICQ.
4) Restart Windows to make sure the update to AURORA.INI has been comitted.
5) Start Aurora Prediction, About should show version

Problem: When you use Voice Options|Autodetect in any of the Aurora programs, the program stops with an error message.
Patch: Download AVD206.ZIP (15K) and see the READ.ME.

Problem: "Error in command string/Error saving setting" error messages spoken by DecTalk Express each time it speaks.
Patch: Download AVD206.ZIP (15K) and see the READ.ME.

Problem: If you want to Custom Install just the Prediction dictionary you must select both Spelling Dictionary and Prediction Dictionary. If you just choose Prediction Dictionary, no dictionaries will be installed.
Workaround: Choose to install both dictionaries, then delete the Spelling dictionary SPELL.DCT if you do not need it.

Problem: You have problems using the Creative Labs TextAssist DecTalk program for speech output in Aurora.
Fix: Obtain TAWSWGUP.EXE from Creative Labs World Wide Web site http://www.creaf.com to upgrade your TextAssist program to version 1.3. Follow the instructions for installation. Quit all Aurora programs. Rename the file CTSFRAME.DLL in your AWIN2 directory to CTSFRAME.BAK. Restart your computer.

Problem: You have a Thinkpad 380 and each time the Aurora RealVoice speaks four junk characters appear at the top of the screen slowly moving from left to right.
Fix: This model of ThinkPad has an unusual display driver. Download ARV208.ZIP (1.7M). Follow the directions in the included READ.ME file.

Problem: The Aurora RealVoice will not speak or makes loud screeching sounds or stutters and hangs the computer.
Fix: We have found that many Windows sound card drivers do not correctly implement some functionality described in the Windows documentation from Microsoft that the Aurora Realvoice relies on. A workaround is available in ARV208.ZIP (1.7M). Follow the directions in the included READ.ME file. If the Aurora Realvoice works on your system, DO NOT download this update which may not.

Problem: The Pronunciation Exception editor occasionally crashes and deletes the exception file that was being edited.
Workaround: We have been unable to reproduce this error in a controlled environment. We have made an update which saves a backup copy of your unedited exception file with the file name extension .BAK before attempting to save your changes as well we have made some internal changes in hopes of fixing the problem. This patch can be downloaded here. Installation instructions are included, run this self-extracting archive in a temporary directory, NOT your AWIN2 directory. Exception Editor 2.02 Patch (EXCED202.EXE - 44K)

All of the problems below have been fixed in Aurora for Windows 2.01.

Aurora for Windows 2.01 has been mailed to all registered Aurora for Windows customers or their dealer as of November 29, 1996. You may download this update at Aurora 2.01 for Windows Update.

Problem: If you press the ` key to read the Aurora Prediction window when there are more than 9 words in the list, Aurora Prediction may stop with a general protection fault or speak garbage. The error message will indicate a problem in module BC402RTL.DLL at address 0001:0000D8F7.
Fix: Download the Aurora for Windows 2.01 Update..
Workaround: In Prediction Options set the number of words in the window to 9 or less.

Problem: If you are using an 8-bit sound card, you may get the error message "xxxx has caused a general protection fault in ARV.AVD at 0002:016A.
Fix: Download the Aurora for Windows 2.01 Update..
Workaround: Choose a different speech synthesizer driver or install a 16-bit sound card.

Problem: If your system is low on memory, the Aurora Realvoice does not always echo typing and does not give an error message as to why it is not speaking. Aurora Talk will always show an error message if there is a problem and can be used to test to see if being low on memory is the problem.
Fix: Download the Aurora for Windows 2.01 Update..
Workaround: Get more memory, close some applications.

Problem: Echo repeats a word followed by a comma twice.
Fix: Download the Aurora for Windows 2.01 Update..
Workaround: None.

Problem: Spell-checking doesn't suggest words very well.
Fix: Download the Aurora for Windows 2.01 Update..
Workaround: None.

Problem: In Microsoft Excel 97 if you type into a cell, the word prediction will ignore the first letter you type.
Explanation: This problem is due to Excel switching you to a different window after you type the first letter. Aurora keeps track of the suggestion list and the keys you have typed on a window by window basis so when Excel switches windows mid-word, Aurora has no way of telling that the two windows are related.
Workaround: Quit all Aurora programs. Edit the AURORA.INI file and remove any Watch lines that contain the word "EXCEL" for example:

Add the line below replacing the ## with a number greater than the number in any other Watch##= lines in your AURORA.INI file.

You can now save your changes to AURORA.INI and restart Prediction. Now to type numbers click in the cell and type the number, Aurora Prediction will not come on, and you won't have trouble with entering numbers selecting words from the prediction window. When you want to type text and have assistance from Aurora Prediction, click on the cell, then click on the formula entry window below the Excel toolbar and enter your text.
