Troubleshooting

Make sure that the speech synthesizer hardware is working correctly before attempting to use it with Aurora for Windows.

If the SSIL interface gives an error message every time it starts that kills or hangs Windows, perhaps because you have accidentally selected the wrong SSIL driver, use Windows Notepad to edit AURORA.INI in your C:\AWIN3 directory to remove the line Driverfile=???? from the [SSIL] section and go through driver installation and selection again.

Look in the directory containing the speech synthesizer driver you are using for any READ.ME files with additional instructions on installing your chosen SSIL driver. Ignore any changes that need to be made to the file OPENBOOK.INI they will have no effect on Aurora for Windows.

Look at the C:\AWIN3\SSIL\READ.ME file for more information on installing some of the drivers. This READ.ME file will not exist unless you have run MAKESSIL.EXE. Ignore any changes that need to be made to the file OPENBOOK.INI, they will have no effect on Aurora for Windows.

Most drivers require that they be installed into the WINDOWS directory according to the instructions in C:\AWIN3\SSIL\READ.ME under "Manual Driver Installation Instructions." This READ.ME file will not exist unless you have run MAKESSIL.EXE. In this case, make sure the SSIL directory is set to C:\WINDOWS in the Voice Setup Dialog for the Aurora SSIL Interface Driver. Ignore any changes that need to be made to the file OPENBOOK.INI, they will have no effect on Aurora for Windows.
